An experienced arbitrator, mediator or special master can be a crucial factor in the successful resolution of a legal dispute or case. Richard M. Borchers has been involved in all forms of alternative dispute resolution, and has brought hundreds of cases to successful resolution during the last 23 years. He has developed expertise in many fields, including resolving cases brought under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA). He served as a special master in the Montez v. Owens lawsuit, the largest federal class-action lawsuit in Colorado in the last 25 years. This case was brought against the Colorado Department of Corrections under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Judge Borchers served as a United States Magistrate Judge for eight years in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado. Prior to his federal judicial service, he was a district court judge in the Seventeenth Judicial District in Brighton, Colorado.
He earned an A.B. degree from Ripon College in Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Colorado School of Law in December, 1970. Judge Borchers has earned an M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Northern Colorado and an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Colorado - Denver.
